Odie Washington - Director DC Dept of Corrections 3/99-3/05 leaves to blaze new trails : Odie Washington - Author of an era where for the first time in history a major correctional system was dismantled in 2001 when Congressional mandated ordered closing the 91 year old DC correctional complex (that consisted of seven prisons) in Lorton, Va. As of his retirement the DC Department of Corrections is primarily a detention system, housing and average of 3,500 inmates at the DC Jail and the privately operated CCA Correctional Treatment Facility, both in SE Washington, DC. Major accomplishments under his direction include the elimination of 2 major court orders (one being over 30 years old), implementation of over $30mil in capital improvements to the DC Jail and a mirad of security improvements. Odie Washington was the 2003 recipient of the highest Assoc of State Correctional Administrators, he was appointed by Attorney General Janet Reno to serve on the Advisory Board for the National Institute of Corrections, served from 1998-2002 as an Commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections, initiated movement for the first DC chapter of the American Correctional Association. Director Washington retired as Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections after serving more than 20 years prior to his DC appointment. He returns to Illinois having truly made a profound difference within the Nation's Capital. This reception, held at the Hotel Washington in downtown DC was well attended by family, friends, DC public service dignitaries and a broad spectrum of DOC employees.
